Flying Eagle Penny Flying Eagle Penny
The first U.S. cent that was made in the modern small size was not the Indian Head, it was the Flying Eagle. They were produced from 1856 to 1859. Notice also that the color is different. The coins were made of an alloy of copper and nickel. For the first few years the Indian Head cents were also made of this alloy. They were changed to bronze in 1864.
